MAGIC: THE EUROPEAN PARTNERSHIP FOR THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF MEDTECH SMES
The MAGIA, Medtech Alliance for Global Internationalization project was implemented within the European Union’s COSME program and involved four major European clusters operating in the medical and human health sector with the aim of promoting the internationalization of their companies.
The four clusters are the bioPmed Innovation Cluster, the Walloon cluster BioWin, Lyonbiopole from the Rhône-Alpes region of France, and Life Science Nord from the Hamburg region of Germany.
The aim of the MAGIA project was to strengthen the competitiveness of medical SMEs in two global target markets and to give greater visibility to the innovativeness of the European Medtech industry through international cooperation and resource sharing.
Among the emerging sectors, medical technology is considered among the most promising but also among the most difficult for small and medium-sized companies and start-ups to tackle. In Europe, SMEs in this sector often face a number of obstacles: strong and well-organized international competition, strict and complex regulations, the need to integrate different technologies, and a lack of time, funds and skilled personnel. The role of clusters is therefore crucial in supporting companies that want to enter international markets and providing them with the most appropriate tools.
Through cooperation and resource sharing at the European level, the Magia project aimed to strengthen the competitiveness of medical SMEs in two global target markets and to give greater visibility to the innovativeness of the European medtech industry.
The four clusters have pooled their knowledge, experience and best practices to achieve the critical mass needed to be the single point of reference for European medical companies.
Operationally, the project was developed over a 24-month time horizon and was divided into 5 separate but strategically consequential work-packages: from the analysis of the competitive environment, we will move on to the definition of the operational strategy and the identification of target markets, and finally to the implementation of training paths and representative missions useful for accompanying MedTech SMEs in international markets.
