DESCRIPTION
The National Institute for Metrological Research (INRiM) is a public research centre with the task of carrying out and promoting scientific research in metrology. INRiM is the National Institute of Metrology in Italy, within the European Association of National Institutes of Metrology (EURAMET).
INRiM carries out studies and research on the establishment of primary standards for basic and derived units of the International System of Units (IS), ensures the maintenance of these standards, their international comparison and provides traceability of measurements to the IS.
Basic and applied research in many fields – such as materials science, nanosciences, quantum optics, the study of fundamental physical constants – as well as the development of new technologies and measuring instruments improve metrology.
As regards life sciences and quality of life, INRiM’s activities focus on the development of metrology science and technology in the fields of biomedical applications and food safety. In these areas of activity, the Institute collaborates with public bodies and private companies to meet the needs of the country.
