Abstract: The objective is to conduct a detailed analysis to identify technological opportunities, guidelines, and to identify appropriate stakeholders (suppliers) for the supply of the technological components necessary for the subsequent detailed design, prototyping, and validation phases of an innovative system for the detection of surface electromyographic signals, their wireless transmission, conditioning, and processing for use in rehabilitation.

THE PROBLEM ADDRESSED

The problem addressed is the detection of surface electromyographic signals, their wireless transmission, conditioning and ‘processing for use in rehabilitation.

The goal is to analyze the response of the muscle to which the electromyographic sensor is applied, which detects the electrical activity of the superficial muscles being examined. In fact, electromyography is an indispensable means to further the diagnosis, especially when the site of injury, extent, and type of injury are unclear, and thus allows targeted intervention with appropriate rehabilitation therapy.

The innovative system to be implemented, after the analysis phase and based on the results provided by the service, will consist of the following components:

  • sensor unit: battery-powered apparatus to which electromyographic sensors are connected
    applied to a muscle of the person
  • wireless transmission of sensor output
  • control unit to interpret the received signals that will drive the power stage.

THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

The following activities were carried out in the area of consulting:

  • study, definition and choice of wireless technology to be used;
  • identification of components needed for project development;
  • implementation and development of a prototype in order to perform performance verifications at
    confirmation of the choices made;
  • performance verification in terms of throughput, transmission distance, power consumption and
    battery life.

The activity of the consultancy was carried out in collaboration with Medical Techology technicians in particular with the person who, with the experience gained in DEM ITALIA s.r.l., has acquired the necessary skills both for the identification of the needs of the users it addresses , and for its future implementation.

PROJECT RESULTS

The activities, pertaining to the counseling service, produced as a result:

  • the choice of wireless technology
  • the testing of components through the creation of a prototype aimed at the
    validation of the choices made.
  • performance verification: data quantity and transmission quality

This realization, represents for Medical Technology a new and important activity that aims to realize, initially at the prototype level, the ‘innovative device based on the indications that have been provided as a result of the activity of the identified supplier. This project was also a first step in expanding its business offerings, giving continuity and profitability to the acquisition of the DEM Italia business unit.
