THE PROJECT.

ABCEurope – Advanced Biotech Cluster platforms for Europe (2009 – 2012), funded under the “CIP-Competitiveness and Innovation Programme – Europe Innova,” was launched in September 2009.

The project aimed to create an international platform for the provision of advanced services to life sciences enterprises, fostering their internationalization and development and stimulating relationships among European clusters.

The partners worked on the following activities:

  • Implementation of training moments for new or future entrepreneurs in the sector (boot-camps of 2-3 days of European relevance);
  • Creation of an international database of sector experts who can support the strategic decisions of enterprises, especially SMEs;
  • Creation of “partnerports” with standardized services: Bioindustry Park is pro-actively positioned to play this role in the Piedmont and Italian markets;
  • Creation of opportunities for technology exchange and international partnering among leading European biotech clusters (Technology Showcase);
  • Creation of a repository of international resources for intellectual property protection, specializing in the Life Sciences sector;
  • Creation of a shared tool to facilitate European companies’ access to high-level research resources and infrastructure (Tools of Science).

TOOLS OF SCIENCE

As part of the ABCEurope project, the European Tools of Science portal had been developed, a useful tool for life science professionals to identify the ideal partner for scientific services.

The 13 bioregions, which were involved in the project (including Bioindustry Park-bioPmed), had collected information on the best facilities and service companies in their regions in an easy-to-search database. Also featured were national and regional funding opportunities to support R&D projects, guidelines and useful links to collaboration tools.

Researchers and entrepreneurs could browse the database, using keywords or categories such as region, stage of development, or specific area of science.er

GUIDELINES ON OUTSOURCING PRACTICE IN LIFE SCIENCE

As part of the “ABCEurope” project, with the cooperation of some CRO experts, a guide was produced containing practical and useful advice aimed at Small and Medium Enterprises, which outsource some stages of the drug development process, in choosing service providers, public or private. Advice is found for every step of the process, from defining needs to legal issues, from quality assurance to finding a contractor.
