Project title: Solid lipid nanoparticles for imaging atherosclerotic plaques
Acronym: ATHIMAG

Type: Project
Annuality: Second
TP/LS membership: CMDI/HMNA 1
Lead partner: Bracco Imaging
Partner: Advanced Accelerator Applications (Italy), Invento, University of Turin, Cage Chemicals

Status: Completed

THE PROBLEM ADDRESSED

Atherosclerosis is a pathology that can lead to serious consequences such as heart attack and stroke.
Atherosclerotic plaques that form within the blood vessels and can lead to such consequences should be diagnosed early to allow appropriate treatment. The diagnostic imaging currently available in the clinic, does not have sufficient tools to ensure the correct evaluation of danger.

THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

In this project, nanoparticles have been developed with a formulation based on natural substances that can selectively accumulate in atherosclerotic plaques at greater risk for the generation of serious cardiovascular events. These nanoparticles have been suitably modified in order to be viewable by means of a magnetic resonance examination with instruments similar to those used in clinical practice.
