THE PROBLEM ADDRESSED

Overall, head and neck cancers account for 5% of all cancers. In particular, the larynx is the most frequent site of tumor appearance, followed by the oral cavity and pharynx. Despite the apparent homogeneity of head and neck tumors, the biological reaction of the body can be very variable. There is therefore a need to identify reliable diagnostic markers that can determine the most appropriate therapy.

THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

PROMOTECO has developed, to support the molecular therapy of neck and head cancers, a molecular diagnostic protocol based on the analysis of genetic information. The project will therefore allow the identification of diagnostic markers that predict what will be the response to a given therapy; moreover, it has developed a diagnostic kit containing such molecular components and the procedure of use.

PROJECT RESULTS

Head and neck cancers are constantly increasing all over the world, especially in young people. Despite the easy accessibility to their analysis, the diagnosis is often late. For their treatment they have gone from surgery to the combination of radio and chemotherapy, with high benefits but with release of toxicity. PROMOTECO identifies diagnostic and/or predictive profiles of response to therapeutic protocols for personalized treatment.
